Why is wind-driven rain a problem?
Wind-driven rain can cause sloped roof coverings to shift and lift. Rain can then be easily driven under the roof covering directly to the unprotected roof deck, where it causes leaks and damage to the inside of the home.

What is a roofing underlayment?
A roofing underlayment is typically a rubberised membrane that goes under shingles to prevent water penetration. It is the one piece of a roofing system that is expressly designed to be waterproof. Without a self-adhered underlayment, water from wind-driven rain can infiltrate under your shingles and damage your roof or even worse, the inside of your home.

What are my options if I decide to reroof?
You can choose a complete replacement of the roof system or a re-cover over the existing roof, involving only the installation of a new membrane and surfacing. If you've already had one recover over your original roof, confirm with DVK roofing that your deck can support a second recover.

If roof leaks. Should it be totally replaced?
Not always. Sometimes leaking can result because some flashings have become loose or a section of the roof has been damaged. A roof failure, however, is generally irreversible and results from inappropriate installation, choice of materials, or the installation of a roof system improper to the building.

Can't I just do the work myself?
Most work should not be do-it-yourself. Professional roofing contractors are qualified to safely and efficiently replace a roof. Novices can harm a roof with inappropriate techniques and injure themselves by falling off or even through a roof in need of replacement. Homeowner maintenance should be confined to roof inspections in both the fall and spring to check for cracked or curling shingles, and to cleaning of rain gutters filled with dead leaves and other debris. If you must see the roof for yourself, use a firmly braced or tied-off ladder equipped with rubber safety feet. Wear rubber-soled shoes and stay on the ladder (and off the roof) if possible.

What makes a difference to how a roof is installed?
First, a roofing system needs to be appropriately planned. What materials are best? Are there any environmental considerations that need to be overcome? Next, roof materials must be properly installed. Alignment and fastening are just two critical variables that must be done right for the roof to work right. Care must be taken in the planning and scheduling so nothing is damaged. Flashing, drip edge, boots, must be done right. These are the areas where some contractors will try to cut corners.
